At Anglo Spanish, we believe literacy is about much more than learning to read and write. In the early years with us, children build literacy through listening, talking, storytelling, singing and play. These experience support brain development, emotional expression and confidence, laying strong foundations for lifelong learning.
We are proud to nurture literacy in both English and Spanish, helping children develop a love of language while connecting them to culture, imagination and storytelling from an early age. Research shows that bilingual children often develop stronger problem-solving skills, memory, and creativity. At Anglo Spanish, our immersive approach ensures children thrive in both languages from the very start.
Building Strong Literacy Foundations
Our approach follows the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which recognises that communication and language underpin all learning. Literacy at Anglo Spanish is meaningful, enjoyable and part of everyday life.
We focus on:
- Rich language experiences through stories, songs, rhymes and conversation
- Early reading skills, such as listening, understanding stories and building vocabulary
- Early writing and mark-making through drawing, painting and hands-on activities
- Confidence and enjoyment, so children see language as something positive and exciting
How We Bring Literacy to Life
Storytelling every day
We share stories daily in both English and Spanish. Storytime is interactive, with children encouraged to talk about characters, predict what might happen next and share their ideas.
Celebrating Spanish literacy
Spanish books play a special role in our nursery, helping children connect with language and culture. Recently, the children have loved Antón Piñón, a wonderful Spanish story that has truly captured the children’s imagination.
Language through play
We nurture literacy beyond books through role play, songs, rhymes and everyday interactions. Our team uses rich vocabulary and supports children to express themselves confidently in both English and Spanish.
Supporting Every Child
Every child’s literacy journey is unique. We celebrate different home languages and developmental stages and work closely with families to support literacy both at nursery and at home.
By the end of their early years at Anglo Spanish, children are confident communicators, enthusiastic readers, and imaginative storytellers.
